Is there still a stigma attached to admitting we work in the adult industry? Is it still thought of as an occupation that should be hidden away in a dark corner out of sight? One that ‘nice’ people would never consider doing?
It would be nice to think attitudes had changed. Working in an aspect of the adult industry should be accepted just like any other job is. But it seems that isn’t always the case.
For most people the reaction is stare at you in stunned silence. Or to look at you with an expression of horror on their face. Some giggle and respond with a remark more appropriate from a teenager than an adult. And every now and then you get a surprise. When they look at you nonchalantly and continue the conversation unfazed by your declaration.
Many people it seems, like to take the stance of ‘if I don’t acknowledge it then it doesn’t exist’. Perhaps upbringing or personal beliefs lead some to ignore or act with indignation when paths cross. Even I have been guilty of this. Giving that box labelled adult industry a cursory glance but never daring to look into it.
That was until now. Working at a business on the fringe of the adult industry has been enlightening. Yes it was nerve wracking opening the lid and peering in. And even scarier to take the step inside in case I went tumbling down the rabbit hole like Alice in Wonderland. But what greeted me was a world filled with amazing people. Fascinating, intelligent, humorous and caring. Yes, sometimes weird and wacky but natural people who are passionate about their industry. They have voices and they are not afraid to use them. They have a desire to learn. They are open to understanding things the average person would prefer to ignore. For me, this makes them amazing people. I feel privileged to know a few of these people. They cover a wealth of adult industry roles. Sex educators , sex bloggers, reviewers, crafts people, radio personalities to models. I have yet to meet the ‘sex worker’ that is the image everyone conjures up at the thought of ‘Adult Industry’. But I am convinced that when I do they will be just as multifaceted and interesting as those I have already met.
