When I was offered the book Role Play Scripts for the Modern Woman by Erica Hart to review I was hesitant in accepting. Role play isn’t really my thing and I was skeptical that I would get anything out of this book. All credit to Erica for being brave and still extending the offer upon knowing this.

Erica has written this as book of two halves. The first contains an insight into why Erica wrote the book. The second contains the actual role play scenarios you can use. It is also accompanied by a free role play you can download.

Perhaps because of my skepticism I found this book difficult to get into. It felt a little like I was reading a 1950 Good Housewife Guide. The kind where the wife is doing everything just to please her husband. I am glad I persevered through my skepticism and continued reading. This is not at all what Erica advocates. Instead she reminds us how important communication and sharing responsibility for the relationship is.

Discussing fantasies, desires and scenarios can arouse. It also serves as a reminder to put a little focus back on your relationship. and the pleasure of it instead of the daily drudge. We all live busy lives and often our relationships suffer for our lack of time. It’s easy to just follow the same routine and not put time into focusing on the intimacy.

We become complacent and comfortable. Jobs, kids, life all need attention. Putting aside time to just focus on your significant other doesn’t always happen. Erica writes from her own experiences of this. She writes from a desire to help others put that spark back into their sex life as she did.

Getting into role-play

For Erica the way to do this was with role-play. Great idea you may think but her first attempt was also almost her last. It was a disaster. It was the cliche of what you think a bad role play session will be. Not knowing what to say, not feeling sexy at all and it being a complete turn off for her and her husband. I personally think this makes Erica the ideal person to write a book on role-play.

Someone who has had the worst experience but come back to try again. Not only try again but find a way that worked to turn it into something enjoyable. This in turn helped bring the spark back into her marriage.

Discovering role-play has also helped Erica understand herself better. As with many women she considered herself submissive in the bedroom. Role-play allowed Erica to discovering a love of being the one sometimes in control. This control in turn made her feel empowered. Erica has used her own experiences to list out various scenarios in the second half of the book.

The scenarios in Role Play Scripts for the Modern Woman start at an easy level before moving to more complexity and intensity. Some have suggestions of props you might want to include. There is also advice on how to build the anticipation. This way you are both excited and turned on before the play even begins.

A great starting point

Even with my skepticism I read the first scenario and thought it was fun and easy. A great starting point for anyone feeling unsure or timid about role-play. The scenario is about giving of a massage. It doesn’t include many prop suggestions or suggested dialogue.

I felt this would be an easy scenario for most people to do without feeling too far out of their comfort zone. There is little that could go wrong or become cringe worthy in this scenario. Unless your partner doesn’t enjoy receiving a massage.

Of course if this scenario isn’t as intense as you would like there are plenty of others for you to try in the book.

As all the scenarios have a set pattern of elements to them you can also use this to create your own scenarios. Following the pattern helps you prepare for setting up a successful role-play session.

Is it worth getting Role Play Scripts for the Modern Woman

Role-play still isn’t really my thing (sorry Erica). But I do feel this book has a lot to offer anyone intrigued by role play who doesn’t know where to start. I also feel those who have tried role-play and are looking for extra ideas would enjoy this book.

The layout and pattern Erica uses for her scenarios are a great addition. They give a clear plan to follow which can be used when creating your own scenarios.

Whether intended or not I found reading this book made me stop and think about my relationships. It served as a reminder not to take them for granted and to make sure I make the time for the ones that are important to me.
